Balboa Brunch: This Saturday!


Post-easter Balboa shuffle time, yeah!

Saturday 26 April, The Wash Bar on the Mound, 11am – 3pm

Another of our Saturday Balboa Brunches at Edinburgh’s Wash Bar. Four hours of fabulous Swing and Big Band music, a nice, wooden floor to shuffle on, lots of lovely, chatty people, and drink and food available for purchase.

Come for half an hour or for four, as you like!

Battle of the Bands – THIS SATURDAY – Friends & Family tickets available!


Yes folks, Edinbop’s first BATTLE OF THE BANDS is this Saturday (12th) and it is an event NOT TO BE MISSED!

The Maid of the Forth Stompers will be facing off against The New Pheonix Jazz Band at the beautiful Edinburgh Academy from 8pm-late. Don’t forget to BYOB!

Tickets are available in advance for £12 (at the Tuesday Night Spoonful @ the Newsroom or Wednesday’s Shoeswing @ The Counting House) or £15 on the door. If you want to bring along some friends & family… maybe introduce a few people to swing or just show them what you can do, you can buy ‘Friends & Family’ tickets on the door for just £6. To make the night even more welcoming, Shell and Tim will be doing a free taster class from 8pm!

If you’ve signed up to Glenn Crytzer’s Musicality Workshop, entry to the Battle is already included! Due to popular demand, we’ve added a few more spaces for the workshop with this internationally-renouned musician and band leader for just £20/£25 (student/non): you can get yours here:

Its only £50 for an All Weekend ticket – a bargain! Beginners classes have been discounted too.

All tickets include social party passes for both the Saturday evening dance (8 pm – late) and Sunday afternoon’s Easter Egg Tea Dance (2.30-5.30pm). Party only tickets will be available on the door £5 for Saturday and £3 for Sunday.

There’s something for everyone – Beginners Lindy, Beginners/Improvers  Balboa, Improvers / Intermediate Lindy and  Intermediate Balboa.

Total beginners very welcome; also people who have just started and want to build a solid technique.

Balboa Intermediates+ with Freddie and Christi
Saturday 19 April, 10:30 – 13:30 (£20 or £35 All day Balboa ticket)
This is for dancers who have been taking lessons for maybe a year and are looking for inspiration.

Balboa Fundamentals with Freddie and Christi
Saturday 19 April, 14:30 – 17:30 (£25 or £35 All day Balboa ticket)
For beginners/improvers who have done a few weeks of classes. Also provides a solid foundation for more experienced dancers too.

Lindy Hop Intermediates with Freddie and Mirjam
Sunday 20 April, 10:30 – 14:30 (£30)
This class is for Lindy Hoppers who have maybe been dancing for a year or so and are looking to make their Lindy Hop flow and open up more space for interpreting and playing with the music.

In celebration and to help prepare, we’re offering free Beginners Balboa classes from now up until Easter Weekend so if you’ve never tried Balboa before or are a little rusty, come along to the wee room at the Counting House,  8-9pm on Wednesdays.

14:30 – 17:30 Easter Tea Dance – with Polish Vodka and Easter Eggs aplenty (eating and painting!)

~ Understanding the music with the one and only Glenn Crytzer; one of the swing scene’s foremost bandleaders (11am-5pm)

“This workshop will give you a foundation in the music, an understanding of the history and different styles, and tools you can use to help you listen more carefully and delve more deeply into the music. Opening up your ears steps your dancing up a level – instantly.” (Glenn)

Cabaret on the 29th Jan was a huge success! With fantastic acts and a brilliant turn out. A big thanks goes out to all those who took part on the night:

Balboa Brunch

The Edinburgh Balboa Brunches are monthly social dance events. They take place on a Saturday at the Wash Bar on The Mound from 11am to 3pm. We will play 4 hours of fabulous swing music to dance to, there will be plenty of lovely people to have a chat with, and there is food and drink available for purchase. All are welcome, but you should ideally know some Balboa basics, as there will be no teaching. Come along for some happy shuffling, be it for half an hour or all four. It is a great way to start your Saturday! £1 donation (goes to bar staff).

If you have never tried Balboa before, please come along to Edinbop’s weekly Balboa classes on Wednesday nights at the Counting House. The beginners’ class starts at 8pm. Give this fantastic form of smooth, yet fast Swing dancing from the 1920s and 30s, a try!

6 Week Solo Jazz Course with Helen Cheney


Learn to dance to the swing jazz rhythms of the 1920s to 40s. This
is a great opportunity to get dancing and let jazz rhythms flow
through your feet. This course will focus on jazz movements, rhythms
and style through routines and solo improvisation dancing.

This course is suitable for complete beginners, so if you don’t have
any experience that’s no problem!

Each week we’ll build the repertoire of moves and rhythms.

At the end of this course you’ll have:

  • Knowledge of classic swing jazz and Charleston moves
  • Rhythm in your feet and body
  • Be able to dance some jazz routines
  • Feel more confident to improvise on the dance floor

Styling workshop with Helen Cheney – 8 Feb 2014


International dance teacher, Helen Cheney, is running 2 hour workshop on improving body awareness and styling for lindy hop and blues dancers. The space will have mirrors so we can get a better feel for how our bodies move and the shapes we’re making.

Improving style leads to:
Better dancing posture (less aches and pains)
Looking and feeling better on the dance floor
Improving lead and follow
Better flow in your dancing

This will be primarily targeted at follow styling, however leads are welcome to join.
