Edinbop’s All-Dances August

Edinbop is taking over the LifeCare Centre again this August! Every Thursday in August we’ll have one all-levels class (7.30–8.30pm) followed by an all-dances social dance (8.30–10.15pm) where our talented local DJs will play music for all of the dance styles that we do here at Edinbop: Blues, Balboa, Slow Bal, Solo Jazz, Lindy Hop, Charleston, Collegiate Shag, and St Louis shag.

The all-levels class is suitable for any level of blues/swing dancer, whether you’re completely new or you’ve been dancing for years. All classes are drop-in and all are welcome; no partner necessary. See our calendar for more details.

World Lindy Hop Day 2019

With World Lindy Hop Day (WLHD) fast approaching, we are celebrating the incredible life, passion, and energy of original Lindy Hopper, Frankie Manning. Edinbop will be hosting a free social dance, with DJ sets specifically themed around the music originally played in the Savoy Ballroom.

Edinbop dancers celebrating WLHD 21018

WLHD falls on Frankie’s birthday, 26th May, and is celebrated by Lindy Hoppers worldwide to remember one of the founders of the dance we love. One thing Frankie is always remembered for was his attitude towards dancing and towards everyone he danced with. The Frankie Manning Foundation has put together a wonderful graphic promoting the values Frankie brought to Lindy Hop:

We highly recommend that our dancers dig into Lindy Hop history and read up on Frankie’s life.

Here’s a short list to start you off:

The Frankie Manning Foundation – a charity dedicated to carrying on the work of Frankie Manning to spread the joy of Lindy Hop throughout the world.

Frankie Manning: Ambassador of Lindy Hop – Frankie Manning’s autobiography.

Why Frankie. – a post from the swing dance blog Swungover*.

Hellzapoppin’ – perhaps the best-known clip of Whitey’s Lindy Hoppers, from the 1941 film Hellzapoppin’. This version was recently uploaded in 1080p HD by Atillo Menéndez. Frankie can be seen wearing a mechanics outfit, dancing with Ann Johnson.

Monday Nights – Shag Takeover

Edinbop is pleased to announce a Collegiate Shag takeover of Monday nights!

The Edinbop Survey is OUT NOW

Find the survey here.

This year, Edinbop is running our big survey. We put out a survey every two years to canvass your opinions on all aspects of how we run – including the weekly lessons (Blues, Balboa, and Lindy Hop), the socials, our teachers, our DJs, weekend events, and much more.

It is really important to us as a committee that we get your feedback. We take your responses into account while planning and running the next two years of dancing. After all, we work for YOU and want to make sure you get what you want/need out of coming along to our lessons and events.

There’s an option to go through the survey just clicking buttons, and this should take no longer than 5 minutes (less if you don’t do all three styles of dance). We have also included several text responses, and it would be fantastic if we received some candid opinions from you regarding the various aspects of Edinbop. If you do wish to comment, it shouldn’t take longer than 10 minutes to complete the whole survey.

The survey is totally anonymous, but is vital in dictating how we progress for the next two years. If you have any issues filling the survey in (including making the survey more accessible), please let us know and we can try to resolve any problems.
