Foundations: Jookin' – in Close Embrace
Blues dancing is a family of dances, many of which can be sorted into two main groups: jookin' and ballroomin'. Jookin' dances were danced in generally smaller and more crowded spaces such as juke joints and rent parties, resulting in movements that are relatively contained and stay in roughly the same spot.Close embrace is a torso-to-torso connection that is typically found across blues dances. We'll be using it as our main form of connecting in this class focusing on blues movements from juke joints.
As always, complete beginners welcome, no partner necessary.

Improvers+ Class: Technique Taster
This class is a chance to dig into a few of those tricky techniques that can really elevate your dancing – like alignments – without getting bogged down in them. We'll use ballroomin' dancing and close embrace as the basis for "tasting" each technique, i.e., spending some time learning and getting a technique into our bodies before putting it aside and moving on to the next one. Whether this will be your first exposure to the more technical aspects of blues dancing or you're very familiar with them but would like to gain some depth, you'll be sure to get something out of this class.
Prerequisites: Participation in the preceding Foundations class or familiarity with connecting in close embrace.
